The Department of Post Graduate studies in History was established in 1963 as Calicut Centre of Kerala University at Guruvayurappan College in Kozhikode. Prof. P. K. Karunakara Menon became head of the department with Dr. T. K. Ravindran to assist him. Sri. M.G.S Narayanan joined them in 1964 at Guruvayurappan College. With the establishment of Calicut University in 1968, the centre became part of the new University with full-fledged research activities. After Prof. P. K. Karunakara Menon, Dr. T. K. Ravindran took up his place as head of the DEpartment of History in Kerala University (1971) and Dr. M.G.S Narayanan was appointed became the Head of the Department in his place at Calicut University. The University has become a centre of research in Kerala History and it has served the field in an excellent way under the leadership of Dr. M G S Narayanan, Dr M. P Sreekumaran Nair, Dr Ibrahim Kunju, Dr. K K N Kurup, Dr. M R Raghava Varrier, Dr K J John, Dr. V Kunhali, Sri. V C Moidu, Dr. S M Muhammed Koya, Sri. K P Velayudhan, Dr. E K G Nambiar, Dr K Gopalankutty, Dr. K N Ganesh, Dr. Asokan Mudon, Dr. T M Vijayan etc. The Department has hosted Indian History Congress, and the South Indian History Congress and also the Kerala History Conference. The small hand book on Kerala History now owned by the Public Relations Department of the Govt. of Kerala called 'Kerala Through the Ages' was prepared by the Department. THe 'Calicut University Historical Series' has published many priginal sources like the ancient text 'Keralolpthi'. The Journal of South Indian History is the research jornal of the Department. The Department offers prograames in MA, M Phil and PhD.
